Project: WM Morrisons Supermarkets , Sittingbourne and Weymouth

Requirement:

Eco Environmental have worked on some fantastic projects in the past but nonetheless we were extremely thrilled when recently asked by our client to provide a range of Bird Deterrent solutions to deny any bird activity at two of their prominent supermarkets in Weymouth & Sittingbourne.

Solution:

Both sites identified the need to deter birds from perching and nesting on their property; bird fouling on the ground can pose a serious risk and slip hazard in areas of high footfall such as the main entrances and exits of the store as well as a health hazard to the various loading bays and “goods in” canopies.

Sittingbourne Distribution Centre – we supplied and installed our 19mm Bird Netting to the underside of the warehouse canopy, fitted vertically and in the form of what appears to look like a “floating net” – net hangars were used to support and reduce the sag of this impressive netting installation.

Zips were sewn into the netting system to allow for future maintenance access to the 48 ceiling lights and 8 high-level heating pipe boiler areas. Bird Spikes were installed to various areas as directed by the client.

Weymouth Store – We removed the worn, existing 19mm Bird Netting to the front and rear canopy and replaced it with a newer and tougher version. Having taken residence on the car park lamp posts it was evident that the noisy resident Gulls could often be seen swooping down and dive-bombing passing customers so to alleviate this matter, we installed 32 rotating Daddi Longlegs to the Lamp Columns to deny any further perching. Furthermore, approx. 6100m2 of 50mm Bird Netting to the main roof areas needed removing and replacing due to its worn state.

Our dedicated teams worked long weeks, weekends and out of hours to deliver these two projects as promised and within the agreed cost. Both however were ambitious projects as they needed to be completed whilst the stores remained opened, operational, and continued to trade.

To ensure that all projects are successfully completed the team follow a robust, three phase works system which includes induction, installation and finally a debrief with each stage carefully monitored and managed by our assigned Project Surveyor whilst working within a live Construction environment.

Access Strategy:

Works on both sites were completed by accessing the areas safely with a MEWP vehicle controlled and driven by our IPAF trained technicians. Some areas were trickier than others, the tight and narrow access areas required skilful planning and understanding to enable the netting to be fitted around the catwalks, ladders and other various work zones ensuring access was still made available to other trades on site.

Comments:

The team @ Eco were delighted to be working with this household name client and only by understanding the requirements fully and liaising with our client were we able to complete all scoped works on time and within budget.

Much of our repeat work comes through recommendation and we believe our impressive client base is testimony to the excellent quality of service we have provided consistently over the last 22 years.
