Project: Winter Gardens Conference Centre , Blackpool

Requirement:

The Blackpool Conference and Exhibition Centre is a brand-new, purpose-built events venue, with the first major building development to happen on the Winter Gardens complex since the construction of the Opera House in 1939.

We were approached by the architect and client who had concerns relating to top of the plant area between the conference roof and acoustic screen. At the time, the HAVC units were exposed to gulls and feral pigeons who were nesting and perching in the area due to un-denied access to the current heat source, a perfect mating and breeding area had been provided.

Solution:

Working from the architects site plans, and by understanding the overall fixing complexities gained by visiting site prior to offering our suggestive scope of works we were able to install our tensioned, 50mm Bird Netting system that included stainless steel fixings and components at a 2m height allowing secure maintenance access to the Roof and Plant area once the building was handed over.

Given the exposed, coastal location of this Project our 50mm netting system is supported by our posts and bases that have been set out at the agreed specified distance around the perimeter, intermediate posts on the mid-section of the installation were included for added stability. On completion we provided the client with our material specification and installation scope so that they could incorporate this information within their operation and maintenance (O&M) manual.

Access Strategy:

Wearing appropriate PPE to ensure safety within the workplace, our two-man team were able to access their working area through the main building entry and out onto the parapet roof. Parts of the working area were space restricted hence our planned activity was risk assessed, agreed with a safe system of work produced and adopted, our trained operators and installers hold up to date certificates for Working at Height, such as PASMA, IPAF and IRATA.

Comments:

Project Manager Stephen Gowling commented “It was an absolute pleasure to work on this prominent Project, by listening to and developing the working relationship with both the Architect and Client we were able to provide a robust deterrent system that allowed for a professional finish to the overall installation”.
