Project: Stockport FC, The Cheadle End , Edgeley Park

Requirement:

Home to Stockport County Football Club, The Cheadle End at Edgeley Park needed an effective anti-perching, bird deterrent solution to keep the 5K+ stadium seats muck free for Seasons to come. Eco Environmental approached stadium manager Richard Hinks when we spotted his LinkedIn post requesting assistance with installing netting to Cheadle End and deterring birds from the stand. We were more than happy to partner up and help!

As always, to ensure the job was completed to our highest standards, the Project team conducted a Site Survey which enabled them to produce an overview report and scope of works before submitting our recommendations and competitive quotation to the client.

It was apparent from our walk around that Bird fouling/Pigeon droppings were already in situ, this was evidenced on and around the stadium seats and neighbouring walkways. Bird Fouling/droppings left unattended can pose a serious health and safety risk and hazard to all that encounter it, in this case the Stockport FC fans, which is why we always take this aspect of our profession most seriously.

Solution:

2,625 Square Metres of high density, UV stabilised 50mm Bird Netting was agreed to be the most effective means of deterring the unwelcomed feathered visitors from the stadium.

All of our humane Netting installations come with a 10-year UV manufactures warranty against failure due to the prolonged exposure of sunlight. This netting system was installed using an extensive variety of materials such as our stainless steel M6 eyebolts, split pins, net spikes, 2mm stainless steel wire, angle brackets and beam clips.

Our netting solutions are available in different mesh sizes according to the target species.

75mm mesh is used for Seagulls, 50mm mesh for Pigeons, 28mm mesh for Starlings and 19mm mesh for Sparrows and other small birds.

Access Strategy:

Cheadle End is a two-tiered stand holding 5044 supporters, making it one of the largest stands outside the Premier League. With over 2625SQM of Bird Netting to be fixed, our team at Eco Environmental used a combination of rope access and Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) to access the inner upper side of the stadium at Edgeley Park. Our install teams are IRATA trained, meaning Industrial rope access methods can be utilised to provide cost efficient alternatives to expensive scaffolding. Rope access application is mainly used when traditional forms of access and mobile hoists are inappropriate or unsafe. In this case, it was the most efficient way of getting the team above the stands, ensuring all fixtures were in place, making Stockport’s Cheadle End bird free for many seasons to come!

Comments:

Stadium Manager Rich Hinks was especially pleased with the work we conducted for Edgeley Stadium and said:

“All was good with the contractors. Eco did a very smart and clean job – we are very happy with the results.”

Stockport FC Director Richard Simkin commented:

“Jonathan has been excellent and a tough negotiator too! The guys on the ground were absolutely excellent and a credit to your company - they worked very hard in a quite challenging environment and supported the other ongoing works within the ground in a safe manner.”
