Project: Intercity House, Plymouth Railway Station , Plymouth

Requirement:

We were invited by our client earlier this year to be part of the of the exciting reconstruction and renovation works that were being completed at Intercity House, an impressive 10-storey building sitting right in the heart of Plymouth Railway Station.

Our site survey confirmed that the established resident, feral pigeons, and other birds were nesting and roosting regularly inside the building, up on the ceiling beams causing fouling issues for the maintenance teams as well as damage to the internal building that is often caused when these birds share our environment.

Solution:

After walking the site with the client and inspecting the various troublesome areas it was agreed that we would supply and install our 50mm Bird Netting creating large netting windows to the East and West elevation of the building to prevent the Pigeons from entering the upper plant room levels.

Due to the “live working site” status, it was important to provide a clean and hazard-free working area for all trades, hence we provided frequent guano cleaning in conjunction with us carrying out the installation of the preventative netting and mesh deterrent solution.

On arrival to site to commence the works it became evident that the M&E had been installed earlier than expected and a last-minute change to our method of installation to the netting would be required as we could no longer fix to the floor level and RSJ’s, this was compounded by the M&E feet and posts being in the way.

It was agreed that the better option, although a little bit more technical, would be to install the weldmesh at floor level, cut around the obstructive areas and marry up to the netting curtains in a manner that meant that the netting would not be weighted and stretched by the mesh thereby providing an effective deterrent system.

Access Strategy:

Roof access was gained internally, and our install team liaised and were assisted by the on-site management team who enabled the smooth materials transfer through a “live working” environment and out onto to the Plant areas, no special precautions needed on this occasion to undertake the works.
