Requirement:

Eco Environmental have once again been asked by this long-standing commercial client to work on a further Civils project! We were asked to provide a Bird Deterrent solution that could help to deny any bird activity at a railway underbridge in Cuffley that was undergoing an upgrade and steelwork replacement.

Have you ever considered what can happen if pigeons’ nest under bridges, pavements, or walkways.

Nesting pigeons can become costly residents and an operational nuisance at stations. They often use the supporting steelwork beneath the platforms canopies as perching and roosting points.

Solution:

This site identified the need to deter pigeons from perching or nesting under the bridge which was part of a replacement scheme for Network Rail.

We are acutely conscious that un-attended pigeon fouling not only increases the risk of transmitting disease to the public, but it can also cause obstruction to people & walkways as it becomes very slippery and dangerous when wet.

Our team installed sheets of steel Pigeon Mesh to the bearing shelves which consisted of a series of stainless-steel bars fitted to the leading edge of the abutments and stainless-steel gauge meshed panels fixed to the posts.

Access Strategy:

This Bird Deterrent System had to be installed to the bearing shelves off-site ready for the bridge replacement works to be completed and we were the natural go to installers to carry out these specialist works.  The benefits of installing off site means advantages in cost, time efficiency, reduced waste materials and better H&S aspects with reduced numbers on site.

These works were to have no impact on train services but there were some traffic restrictions on Station Road at the railway bridge and at a nearby compound on Cuffley Hill so the work can be carried out safely.

Paul Rutter, route director for Network Rail’s East Coast route, said: “This work to upgrade the railway bridge near Cuffley station is vital so train services on the Hertford Loop, which connect communities into London and with the East Coast Main Line, can continue running reliably for future generations.

“We have carefully planned the project to keep disruption for people and businesses in Cuffley to a minimum and we’re sorry for any inconvenience the road closures cause.”
