Project: Aldi, Parc Tawe , Swansea

Requirement:

Aldi, Parc Tawe is situated on a large retail park and leisure area in Swansea and is located close to the bank of the river Tawe, also home to our wildlife and feathered friends including the resident Gulls who had established prominent residence on this retail park.

Gulls like to nest together in large groups hence over the years, our client had been experiencing a gradual build-up of Gull related debris such as nesting materials, feathers and food waste as well as a large accumulation of unsightly guano. This had been washed away with the heavy rainfall into the gutters and downpipes flooding this store and neighbouring buildings.

Solution:

The project management team @ Eco Environmental were asked to consider and propose a long-term solution that would prevent this unwanted issue from reoccurring in the future.

We installed our 50mm Gull Netting with a mixtures of support wires and fixings to the outer perimeter of the building to ensure that the Gulls were prevented from accessing the roof with most of the netting being installed behind the roof’s parapet wall, making this an effective, robust, and discreet solution, especially when viewed from ground level.

Access Strategy:

Due to the nature of the works, we initially utilised a MEWP vehicle to gain access to the roof area, this allowed us to safely transport the heavy materials to our work area, in line with the HSE manual handling guidance; the teams were also able to access the external Haki staircase out onto the parapet roof.

Comments:

Adam Gibbons, Estates Manager – Parc Tawe

“This was one of those projects that everyone dreads, but I must say from start to finish Eco Environmental were an absolute breath of fresh air. Prior to any works commencing the communication was constant and straight away put my mind at rest.”

“All quotes were received and were displayed in a professional manner and were extremely clear, precise and gave excellent detail as to the works that would be completed. The permits to work were competed in advance so on the start day everyone ran smoothly. Each day all engineers would receive a ‘toolbox’ talk as to the works at hand and were always well presented, polite and were always wearing their correct PPE.”

“At the end of every day all waste materials were removed, and the site was left clean and tidy ready for the next day. Upon completion of the bird netting works and as part of the sign off procedure I was walked around the area, so I was fully aware of the high standard of work which had been completed.”

“Moving forward we will be using Eco Environmental to complete the annual maintenance requirements as well as using them to complete similar projects in the future.”
