Project: Balfour Beatty , Dundee Railway Station, Scotland

Requirement:

Balfour Beatty successfully completed works to the £28.5 million Dundee Railway station, on behalf of Dundee City Council.

Balfour Beatty utilised its extensive experience in the construction of complex projects on a live, operational railway, to deliver a new station and concourse and Eco Environmental were delighted to have been chosen as the preferred Bird Control installation team on this impressive project.

Eco were asked to prevent Pigeons from perching and nesting within the Underside of the station platform canopy.

Bird fouling on the platform areas can become slippery when wet and under foot, thereby creating a slip hazard and would pose a H&S problem for any buildings that are open to the public.

In addition to the above the Pigeon prevention works we were instructed to deter the Gulls from perching on the leading edge of the Front and Side elevations of the Station by means of an effective, aesthetically pleasing Deterrent system.

Solution:

Station Canopy Platform - Eco Environmental supplied and installed our 50mm Eco Bird Netting system with zip access and fixings to the Underside of the station platform canopy. These works were carried out within a Network Rail possession period which meant that our teams carried out works at night time and the working shift time was shortened; part of our RISQS audit protocol allows us to issue TVP’s to accommodate such types of works.

Station Roof Leading Edge – Working from plans provided by the Architect and Client, Eco Environmental were able to present a solution in the form of our low-profile electric track system with a Solar power supply, often referred to as AviShock. Our double row installation would deter the Gulls from landing and as this system is humane, it will not cause pain or inflict suffering on any species of bird that may come into contact with the product.

Access Strategy:

Platform Works - carried out using a non-conductive (GRP) mobile access tower (PASMA trained staff).

Roof leading edge works - Access to working area via roof hatch, safe working from man safe system and fall protection harness.
