Requirements

Earlier this year, experienced civil engineering contractor Whitemountain were awarded the Colley Lane Southern Access Road in Somerset (CLSAR) which included the construction of two new bridges, carriageway and new cycle and footways.

Our scope of works was to prevent resident birds such as Crows and Pigeons from roosting on the underside of the new bridge beams. Bridges provide plenty of exposed areas of steelwork and girders for the birds to roost and shelter on, the build-up of Bird droppings (guano) can pose a risk to public safety and health as paths and walkway areas can become slippery and unsafe.

Solution

Eco Environmental supplied and installed our 50mm black, knotted Bird Netting and stainless-steel eyelet fixings to the new bridge beams; the Bridge steels were craned into position in pairs meaning that the completion of the netting works took place in situ. Understanding the client’s critical path and programme strategy was paramount in delivering our Bird Netting package on time and to budget.

Access Strategy

Working closely with David Harrison the Senior Construction Manager @ Whitemountain our installation team revised the access strategy on site and were able to complete the works safely without the requirement for any infill scaffolding saving our client a considerable sum of money. Rope access works make difficult to reach locations accessible in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner hence we deployed our Level 3 IRATA led team to this site to carry out the works.

Comments

Whitemountain Senior Construction Manager:

David Harrison commented “The team were very well organised and motivated to get the work finished, the resulting net is spot on”
