Requirements

Having already successfully worked on Phase One back in 2020, Eco Environmental were delighted to be contacted once again and asked to provide a further solution to Phase Two of the continuing project.

The resident birds that had been denied access to the roofs of Phase One were now looking to assume residency on Phase Two of the development.

This highlights the importance of understanding the breeding and nesting habits of various species of birds including Gulls, Pigeons and Crows when working on large span roof area as they can cause all sorts of damage to the roof once in situ, including anything that is stored in the buildings below.

Solution

We specified and installed our 50mm grade translucent Gull/Pigeon netting supported by upright posts that were installed at agreed centres, using non-piercing bases for better roof protection.

The roof nets were raised to a height of 750mm, thus creating a low profile, humane, physical barrier to deny the birds any form of access. Due to the coastal location of this site stainless steel fixings were used as usual to provide longevity to the overall system.

Access Strategy

We gained access to the working roof areas via both MEWP’s and a temporary Man safe system/ fall arrest device. Additional rescue ropes were also in situ to allow for the remote lowering of an unconscious casualty from the roof if a MEWP were not available at the time.

All our IPAF trained MEWP operators have attended a recognised operator training course and received a certificate and card listing the categories of MEWP the bearer is trained to operate.

Comments

Eco Environmental Project Manager Stephen Gowling commented “We would like to pass on our thanks to the Site Manager Craig, and all of his staff for enabling this project to run smoothly and allowing us to complete on time”
