Seagulls causing considerable damage to pebble ballast roofing

The Royal Cornwall Hospital has recently had a new Health & Wellbeing Centre built with a rooftop that housed decorative pebbles, , known as ballast or pebble ballast roofing. These were proving to be a hit with the existing resident seagulls.

We were contacted in the summer by the principle contractor to offer a bird deterrent solution to stop active seagulls from picking up the decorative pebbles from the building roof top and dropping them from substantial height on to the ground below causing considerable damage to parked vehicles.

Seagull problems can be quite common on ballast roofing and pebble ballast roofing and so effective bird deterrents, such as bird nets are a great idea.

Eco worked closely with the client and design team over a period of time to develop a system that could be installed tightly across the pebbles to deny the seagulls further access with a view to protecting the parked vehicles below – these falling pebbles were obviously a health and safety risk to the general public who use the building on a daily basis.

A bespoke Pebble Bird Netting System supported by specially fabricated base plates and up stands were commissioned to help form and support the structure of the Pebble Netting System and this was successfully installed in October 2013.

Bird nets and bird netting are an effective bird deterrent providing a discreet and impenetrable barrier that protects the premises without harming the birds.
