Pigeon Netting as Bird Deterrent in Plymouth Clock Tower

A national house builder called Eco Environmental to resolve a bird deterrent problem they had inherited on a listed clock tower, forming an integral part of their new residential development in Plymouth.

The tower had suffered years of neglect prior to this and a large number of feral pigeons had been roosting in the upper clock tower and lower floors and staircase. Access was a problem, as internal access for the work was not permitted due to structural issues with the main access staircase.

We were called in to provide a full bird control report and bird deterrent specification to resolve the problem.

We specified the installation of a Birdnet pigeon netting system to the four main openings in the upper clock tower. A 34-meter truck-mounted hoist was used to get access to the four sides of the high level clock tower. Using the large extendable fly job, we were also able to drop down into the adjacent open building to seal off large windows within the tower structure.

This specialised piece of access equipment meant the client did nothave to erect expensive scaffolding internally to provide safe access for our installers for a 2-3 hour installation.

The truck-mounted hoist was able to safely drop down into the building and allow our team a safe platform from which to work off, installing the Birdnet pigeon netting systems safely and on programme.
