Anti bird netting with nano coating create long-lasting bird deterrents

Crucial to the design are the massive sea water chambers that will hold water which will be used to cool the plant. The chambers hold screened and chemically treated water drawn from the Haven before being pumped to the turbines. Eco Environmental Services were called in to design and install a unique bird netting system to act as debris screens to prevent material and debris from entering the pumping chambers and causing damage to the pumping system.

Purpose made fixings were designed and sourced to cope with the unique requirements of this installation, every aspect involved a unique level of design and challenge for the team involved.

Eco specified the unique nanoShell Coating applied to our 19mm fine gauge bird nets. This nano coating is used to protect the fibres of the netting material from weathering, UV damage and importantly snow settling on the system causing failure and collapse. The protective coating lengthens the life span greatly compared to normal bird nets and thus reduces maintenance and replacement frequencies.

In this instance, the unique waterproofing properties of the product were the main factor in choosing this nano coating. With the bird netting close to seawater they can quickly break down, weaken and fail. The nanoShell protective coating dramatically reduces this break down over time by coating the individual fibres with nano-sized silicon particles that fuse onto the fabric, encapsulating and protecting the netting material.

With works nearing completion at the pumping station, Eco Environmental Services Ltd have worked under the leadership of Walters to deliver the anti bird net systems on time to allow for the chambers to be flooded and for the commissioning phase to progress.

Mark Rees of Alstom said "Both WUK( Walters) and Eco's efforts and flexibility in this matter are appreciated, thank you.”.

David Jeffries from Walters: "Please pass our thanks to your lads for their patience & hard work yesterday.”
